Aiden Grimshaw posted his debut single, Is This Love, to the world just the other day and since it's premiere it has been greatly received and attained masses of praise - including comments that it is by far the best X Factor single to emerge ever. I'm not completely sure though.
In part I absolutely agree with the aforementioned comments because it's something completely different to the shows normal output and puts an Indie/Dubstep spin on what you'd expect to be a slow, moving and classic performance. He evidently works well in that sector.
My main grievances with this song is the unneeded and somewhat imposing use of auto-tuning and high pitched squeals. The chorus, especially, takes over and can ruin the graphically cracking song that rests beforehand.
His voice throughout the verses, despite being tuned, aren;t bad at all and the feel of it all comes across as manic, crazy and actually very moving along with the bassy riffs and blistering drumbeats - I actually really like it. I'm just not so keen on that chorus.
I think I can understand the comments because, let's be honest, generally the songs that come from the X Factor pieces of pop drivel that make me cringe in angst ... but this at least has some independence about it and some character that seems more adult than the kids of One Direction (just an example). In terms of reality, it's a good song, but not much more. However, in terms of the X Factor, it'll go down in history as a triumph.
I think I can agree with the comments on it's status, but still wish more from X Factor contestants. What's your take?
Paul.
